TV viewing # draft three #

Television is a fascinating invention which fulfills the need of both young and old. Nowadays television is so prevalent in the world where 90% of the households in the developed countries own at least one television set (Sharif 1999). According to American Time Use Survey (2003), the American spends most of their time on watching television. The spending of time on this sedentary activity has induced the concern about the effect of television viewing. People start to discuss and argue whether watching television is a boon or a detriment to the people. Without any doubt, I assert that television viewing delivers huge information, improves the learning process and develops critical thinking among the viewer.
First, television acts as an audio-visual medium to deliver the hefty information to the viewer (Leigh 2001). By viewing TV programs, people can experience the wonders of the nature, the beauty of the world and marvels of the science world in an entertaining and enjoyable manner (Rutherford 2002). It is demonstrated that people are now more aware about their country, their own cultures and foreign cultures (Leigh 2001). People are also clearer about the international news in the world. Rather than becoming spoon-feeds viewers, they are building up curiosity about the world and start exploring things by themselves. For instance, they are motivated to do charity works such as collect fund for victims of famine in Africa (Sharif 1999).
Besides, learning process can be implemented more efficiently with the incorporation of television throughout the process. Television is a powerful and influential learning tool where knowledge can be presented in a more catchy form. The science, geography and other subjects can be shown in an absorbing style, enable the learner to absorb that knowledge smoothly (Leigh 2001). Evidences proved that students are more acceptant of learning knowledge through watching and hearing rather than reading solely (Leigh 2001). Moreover, small children like pre-scholars can start learning letters, words, numbers and colours by watching educational programs such as “Play School”. These programs include animation and puppets in the show which make the process more fun (Rutherfood 2002). In the end, children are inclined to master more vocabulary.
Last, television viewing intrigues critical thinking among the viewer. Families can harness any program shown as a topic for the discussion with their child. This helps to develop critical thinking that is needed in the social setting (Sharif 1999). On the other hand, TV program broadcasts latest current events of local and world, arouses the attention of the viewer and people will pay attention to those grave issues critically and meticulously. This catalyzes the involvement of public in those issues and pressures are being deployed on the party involved (Rutherfood 2002). Therefore decision makers will consider the reaction of the audience before making any conclusion. This indirectly promotes the development of democracy around the world (Rutherfood 2002).
In short, television viewing enables the viewer to learn vast amount of information and knowledge and develop critical thinking. Although some say that excessive viewing of television will nullify the anticipated benefits, mitigation can be carried to reduce the severity triggered by excessive TV viewing. Therefore, I strongly believe that people are profoundly benefited from TV viewing if this usual activity is carried out in a modest manner.

Argumentative Essay : Junk Food # draft 2

Junk food refers to the food that high in fat and salt and typically has low nutritional value. (Smith 2005) These include takeaway foods, pre-packaged meals and sugary snack foods. (Tran 2005) Recently junk food is accused to be the main culprit of childhood obesity since junk food can be obtained easily in the school canteen. In my opinion, the sale of junk food in canteen should be confined as junk food poses health and behavior problem to student and litter problem to the school.
First of all, consumption of junk food by children brings grave effects on the children health. According to research conducted by Health Foundation (2005), junk food such as biscuit, chips, confectionery, hamburgers, instant noodles and soft drinks have low nutritional value. Junk food is usually high in fat, sugar, salt and commonly contains synthetic flavor enhancers. This cogent argument is supported by Tran (2005) who said that product like potato and chocolate raise the intake of calories by the youth and this lead to youth weight gain. Survey conducted by Australian Nutrition Journal (2004) shows that more than 50% of Australian children are consuming sugar more than recommended intake. Hence consumption of junk food is likely to bring about child obesity which may lead to heart disease, osteoarthritis and some cancers.
Besides, behavior and attitude of children are affected when they consume junk food. Chemical additives are added into junk food to enrich the flavor and make the junk food last longer. These detrimental additives have been proved to trigger behavioral problems in children, such as hyperactivity and poor concentration. (Smith 2005)Research shows that decrease in proportion of junk food in children meal can improve their behavior. In the website The Food Show, Green (2005) said that prohibiting the sale of junk food in canteen are believed to increase the learning potential of student where teachers observe that student became calmer in the class.
Moreover, litter problem in school can be reduced by banning the sales of junk food in school canteen. Packaging of junk food such as cans, crisp packets, cartons and plastic containers brings serious litter problem in school. School that banned the sales of junk food faces less serious litter problem. With the reduction in the amount of litter, the health and safety of people in school are safeguarded. (Smith 2005) Furthermore, more time can be spent on the maintenance of beneficial school project rather than on the cleaning of school compound. (Green 2005)
In short, the banning of sales of junk food in canteen is a boon to both students and school. It is true that banning of sales of junk food in canteen causes the profit earned by school to decline. Statistic by School News (2005) reveals that canteen profit at Cook High School drops after the canteen switch to sell healthy food from junk food. However school is a place to educate the youth. Therefore government should necessitate the banning of sales of junk in school by providing financial support to school so that the canteen can become a place to teach the student to eat well.
