Aussie News: Wangaratta residents near floodwaters told to leave their homes

The worst inundation in 15 years stroked on Victoria’s northeast. The floodwater broke the river banks across Victoria’s north and west, threatening vast amount of homes, business and properties. The resident in Wilsons Rd, Wangaratta were exhorted to evacuate their properties immediately where they were told they had 10 minutes to return to their home, turn off their gas, secure their animals and get their possessions. The notice was given as the level of flood water was expected to rise up to 2 meter.

Accordingly the predicted damage bill has reached 10 million dollars as the flood turned into a catastrophe. Hundreds of farmer were waterlogged while thousands homes from the Mornington Peninsula to Ballarat suffer from electricity breakdown after being hit by gale force wind. Besides, the business are entitled for huge clean-up cost while insurance and agricultural stock expected to be hit severely when the markets reopen.

The Premier John Brumby gives commendable praise to the emergency services work and said that the lesson of this flood has been learned. Nonetheless, Mornington Peninsula residents complained that the state lack of preparations and preventives measure after some homes were left in dark for more than 24 hours.
