Aussie news: Police on the hunt for man using fake passports to open bank accounts in Adelaide

A WELL-SPOKEN man with a British accent has been using a fake passport to open bank accounts in Adelaide.

The man successfully opened bank accounts with four major banks in the southern suburbs, but police intercepted the debit cards before they reached him.

The man also rented a post office box from Campbell town post office, where he was caught on security cameras.

He was at the post office on Monday, March 29, between 4.30pm and 5pm and on Saturday, May 1, about 11.30am.

The man could be charged with deception and dishonest dealing with documents, with each charge carrying up to 10 year jail sentences.

Detective Brevet Sergeant Carly Jamieson from the Major Fraud Investigation Section said the man could have been planning a major online scam, selling "non-existent" items through classifieds or on eBay.

"I guess the sky's the limit," Det-Sgt Jamieson said.

"(Fraud) is becoming more common with, especially with the use of the internet ... It's definitely on the rise."

The man gave the banks the home address of a woman unconnected to him and then tried to divert his mail to the post office box.

However the woman realised and alerted authorities.

"What greatly assisted this investigation and possibly prevented further offences being committed was the vigilance displayed by the property owner," she said.

"As soon as you become aware of something like this you need to notify police. We also advise the public to put a lock on their letterbox, shred any personal identification documents and visit websites www.sapolice.com.au, www.scamwatch.gov.au or www.stopidtheft.com.au."

Police are still trying to establish the man's true identity.

He is described as aged in his mid 30s, about 172cm tall with a dark complexion, a muscular build, a shaved head and possibly a neatly trimmed goatee beard.

He is said to be very well spoken and could be driving a small, black 4WD.

Anyone with information should phone BankSA Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
